Ethnic Cultural Theater
The oratorical contest was created to showcase black intellectualism
on the
University of Washington's campus. Often times African-Americans are
praised for our talent in singing, dancing, and athletics. The goal of the
oratorical contest is to show that black intellectualism is alive and well in
the minds of our young men. Alpha Phi Alpha has a long history of great
thinkers and speakers. These men include the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.,
Paul Robeson, Cornell West, W.E.B. DuBois, and many others. This event is open
to black males who are not affiliated with any black Greek organization. An
additional purpose of this event is to give the black males a platform to speak
about an issue that affects them. This was created in memory of the late Brother
Dr. Kipchoge Kirkland and his devotion to intellectualism, the arts, and expression.
